Handmade
Brick
For centuries, the only method available for brick manufacturing was
to mold individual units by hand in mold boxes. Once removed from the
boxes, bricks were then placed in kilns to be fired. As each brick remained
stationary throughout the firing process, some were closer to the fire
than others, giving the batch of brick a broad range of colors running
from orange to black. Between the hand molding and the heat inconsistency,
the method resulted in an endless number of imperfections that created
character and warmth in the wall. Hand molded brick is still available
today, and still offers the richest, warmest, most traditional look.
As it is the least efficient manufacturing process, the purchase price
of handmades is generally higher than those of other brick products.

Molded
Brick
Much of the color richness and character of handmade brick is available
at the more competitive price of machine molded brick. While both handmade
brick and machine molded brick are molded, the term "molded"
is generally used to refer to the machine version unless otherwise indicated.
Colors and ranges are similar to handmade, but without the folds and
crevices evident in the faces of handmades.
