The terms "ad mix" and "through the body" are generally used to refer to brick whose raw material yields color in the cream, brown, or gray families. In other words, brick not made with a traditional red body.

Unlike light-colored bricks created with coatings on red brick, ad mix brick is the light face color throughout the body of the unit. Chips, headers and saw cuts are not concerns with the consistent color through the body.

Finish is generally smooth and edges sharp, all making ad mix brick popular in commercial design. These brick, however, do come at a cost premium due to the special materials and processes involved.
